2010 tree felling on Holmbury Hill

Holmbury Hill tree felling plans for 2010
Holmbury Hill is one of the most popular places in the South East for mountain biking, and rightly so given the large number of excellent trails there. But it is a ‘working forest’ as in the trees are there as part of the managed landscape. From time to time this means they have to be thinned to ensure the sustainability of the area.

Over on the Hurtwood Ranger’s excellent blog (which keeps you nicely up to date with Holmbury activities) there’s a map showing where planned tree felling and thinning work is due to be carried out over the course of 2010. It’s quite an extensive area and unfortunately it appears as though some of our favourite trails are likely to be affected.

My map reading skills are weak-to-poor but it certainly seems to me that Telegraph Road is due some disruption and also possibly parts of Barry Knows Best (BKB) as well as other local trails. At this stage there’s no telling when the work will begin as it’s largely weather dependent but this is just a heads up to let people know.

I just hope the trails survive largely intact…

    Hi Matt,

    All seems very fair to me.

    I guess I read that BKB might be disrupted and think “that’s bad planning having just spent money (?) making it so great!”

    Still the area has great trails and once the logging is done I’m sure the “offical” trails will once again grow.

    There’s quite a bit of logging going on at the moment around ‘I should coco’ and that area. I was up there on Sunday.

    I always find that the logging/thinning is a good thing. It changes the trails and often opens up new ones. There seems to be a desire to make the trails more permanent in the last few years.

    I’ve always liked the natural evolution of the area, to stop this and keep the same few trails would be a bit boring after while. I look forward to the new bits 🙂
