Lance Armstrong breaks his collarbone; Mark Cavendish wins
I guess this one’s for Roadie-Dendron but thanks to Lee for sending me the link. Actually, I think Lance is a source of inspiration for lots of riders and of course he’s been known to dabble in the odd MTB race in his time.
Now it seems his latest ‘adventure’, riding this year’s Tour de France is in doubt after a crash on Monday left him with a broken collarbone. Co-incidentally, it’s the same injury I suffered last year, putting me in good company. Or, to put it another way, it can happen to anyone. The shot of Lance arriving at the hospital looking decidedly uncomfortable reminded me of my experiences although of course I looked a lot less athletic. I wonder how many people asked him if it was because he fell off his bike?!
While we’re pausing dangerously on the subject of the dark side, how many of us noticed that Britain’s Mark Cavendish won the Milan – San Remo classic at the weekend? This is huge, with Lance himself congratulating Mark who entered the race ‘for the experience’ and won a close finish after seven hours in the saddle.
Unfortunately it went almost unnoticed in the UK despite our new-found interest in cycling since the Olympics – I only heard about it myself on the radio last night. I may not be clued up on the nuances of competitive cycling but it’s clear that congratulations are in order as this is one of the great road classics.

Yeah you’re not a proper cyclist until you’ve broken a collarbone…!
Cav is fantastic and made watching the TdF last year much more exciting for me; trying to see where he is in the bunch sprint at the end of a stage and seeing him trying to get through – IMO flat stages are quite boring normally!

I commandeered the TV for an hour on Saturday afternoon to watch the finale of Milan-San Remo (no mean feat in our house). Amazing sprint finish from the boy Cavendish, I really thought he’d blown it.
Winning Milan-San Remo at 23 is like Lewis Hamilton winning the F1 Champs at his age. Cavendish is well on his way to becoming the best ever Brit cyclist and a superstar (in Europe at least) of cycling.
Best of all he hasn’t got a particulalry retiring personality. In fact you would go as far as to say he’s a cocky git. There is no discussion of “no more personalities in sport” with him around.
